In April 2023 I was commissioned by the Udny Arms Hotel to create a large oil painting for their restaurant. The hotel was still being renovated at the time, so the process involved working with their interior designer, Morag Cameron, who described the nautical inspiration behind the room’s design, as well as giving me furnishing samples for colour matching. The idea was that the painting be a continuation of the view from the 3 large picture windows which look over the estuary towards the dunes in the distance.
I loved working so large! The painting is 1.8m square, and the subject matter is right up my street so it was a pleasure to work on – if a little nerve-wracking at times, as a commission always is! I finally handed over the finished piece in August and the hotel reopened in October. It was fun to see the painting in-situ with the room all done up, and a relief to see it fitted in nicely. The hotel is a fantastic (re)addition to Newburgh; so many people have fond memories of the Udny Arms and I think this renovated version really does those memories justice, adding a modern twist to an old classic.
